“Emerging Horizons: Youth Insights on Climate Change”
This report, titled “Emerging Horizons: Youth Insights on Climate Change and Breakthrough Solutions,” synthesizes findings from a participatory foresight workshop held by UNICEF Innocenti and UNDP with 100 young climate innovators from 63 countries. Using the “Three Horizons” framework, the publication explores the transition from current unsustainable systems to a preferred future. At Horizon 1: Business as Usual: Participants identified traditional top-down governance, profit-centric economic models, and significant gaps in eco-literacy as major barriers. They highlighted how current systems often exclude youth and marginalized groups from decision-making. At the Horizon 3: Visions of the Future: The youth’s vision is centered on sustainability, equity, and justice. This includes a diverse mix of renewable energy, inclusive climate education that integrates indigenous knowledge, and community-driven urban and agricultural practices. And at the Horizon 2: Innovation and Disruption: To bridge the gap, young people advocate for harnessing digital tools (like AI and blockchain for energy trading), promoting circular economies, and scaling community-led initiatives such as seed banking. The report outlines three critical areas for future exploration: transforming governance through community-centric approaches, embedding equity in economic models for renewable energy, and advancing eco-literacy as a catalyst for change. The process demonstrated that youth foresight not only informs policy but also helps mitigate climate anxiety by providing young people with agency and a structured way to plan for the future. The findings will inform the 2024 Leading Minds Conference on Climate Action, focusing on overcoming barriers to solving the climate crisis.
