“The Endless Sea: Imagining a Story of Tomorrow”
The document “The Endless Sea: Imagining a Story of Tomorrow,” prepared by Giuliano da Empoli for the More in Common initiative, explores the need for a new political narrative capable of overcoming the current “hope gap” in society. The author argues that modern politics fails when it offers purely technocratic responses to citizens who are seeking meaning and agency in their lives. To reverse this situation, he proposes a shift from negative narratives based on sacrifice toward positive and aspirational visions. This shift requires the use of six “intensifiers” to sustain mobilizing energy: the fun factor, which strengthens social bonds; prefiguration, which makes the future tangible through concrete experiences; transgression, which subverts established orders in order to generate enthusiasm; narcissism as a driver of change, allowing individuals to see themselves as protagonists; the use of unlikely heroes as trustworthy messengers; and a new style of empathetic and collaborative leadership. The report also introduces the concept of “existential politics,” focused on everyday life and on restoring individuals’ sense of control. This involves reframing the climate agenda as a way of feeling “at home” in the world, redistributing dignity to manual labor, and navigating the digital age through the concept of “onlife,” which integrates online and offline lives in a more human way. Finally, the document advocates for democratic innovation by combining the depth of deliberative democracy with the agility and direct engagement required by smartphone culture, with the aim of reconnecting citizens to the power to shape their own destiny.
