The languages, concepts, and metaphors we adopt to refer to artificial intelligence shape what we are able to imagine in an increasingly mediated world by large language models — and also shape the futures we will be able to envision. What emerges now from narratives about the use and development of AI influences the imagination of what we are capable of being, creating, and contesting futures. And what circulates today has narrowed down to two scenarios: AI as an existential threat or as a solution to everything. Between fear and promise, there is little space left to imagine. Toriba insists on the human repertoire as a starting point: words and stories, the people behind the code, the community, and the politics that support its development. With a qualitative research of discourses and imaginaries, conducted in partnership with Ipsos, we listened to leaders and experts from multiple sectors to establish the basis on which we will reimagine, and then tell, stories of futures that are yet to circulate.
Artists and activists come together to build worlds and stories, developing characters and narrative arcs in online writers' rooms, mentored by professionals from Futures Studies and the audiovisual field. At the end of the 2024 edition, five works on social and climate justice reached the public: two short films, two fiction podcasts and a comic.
